Pilgrim Among the Tradesmen

The ninth chapter is the first section where Comenius is more expansive. In this episode he details of the Order of the Tradesmen. While Comenius spends more time amidst what might be seen as white-collar associations, he starts his story in the practical end of the world. Today this is portrayed as where all the sweating and dying goes on. Right away, Pilgrim starts to dissect the reality of what he sees, “that all the work of men was for his stomach.”

Since discovering Labyrinth of the World, 20 or so years ago, I am continually astounded by it. Once I had, I finished adapting this work—from three of its more complicated to read English translated forerunners—I went about to try and find endorsements. I was struck by the comment of one person who rather emphatically said that “Pilgrim’s Progress is a much better story.” This came from a professor of literature that had no prior exposure to Labyrinth. I honestly beg to differ on several levels. This post will spell out how Labyrinth of the World is a much healthier book from a spiritual perspective.

I Chose to Adapt Labyrinth of the World

In 2020, when I seriously considered adapting Labyrinth of the World, I was first discouraged by one scholar with some relatively strong opinions. The import of his investigative questioning was that there was no value in any work not directly translated from the Czech into English. Yet, after four prior attempts to invent that wheel, I did not figure using that same approach was the way to go. This post is about my motives for adapting The Labyrinth of the World, which is also articulated more extensively in the Front Matters of the new edition of this book.

Do you get the feeling like the earth is shaking beneath you? Daily I experience folks who express feelings and act as if life is quickly diminishing as we’ve known it. I observe so many who are angry and ready to argue. Hardly a month goes by where there are no reports of outbursts on airplanes and news of a mental health pandemic in the wake of Covid-19. This says nothing about jumping energy costs, increasing inflation, and political scandals that enters our minds from every bit of noise we hear through virtually every source.

The Tale of Two Allegories

The thinkers behind the two books were entirely different. Yet, it is interesting how these extreme differences led to books with strikingly similar characters and elements. However, what is most telling is the outcome from the views employed in the one book. It has fed religious institutionalism and escapist perspectives among church people for centuries.

However, relatively few know him as the author of an epic allegory, which inspired the second best-selling book in history. What I am about to divulge is not well-known, even in scholar’s circles. Those who do know what I am about to share are not likely to press on the matter. The second best-selling book in history is so highly revered that to lay shadow over its originality is like touching the third rail in politics.
